1963 Press Photo First Federal Savings ceremony flag

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: Tradition was observed Tuesday when the top piece of steel went aloft on the new 23-story First Federal Savings of Detroit building at Michigan and Woodward. Proud steelmen hoisted an American flag to the pinnacle of their work in a ceremony whose origins are lost in antiquity. In the old days a green branch was lashed to the ridgepole when the framwork was completed on a farmer's new barn.
