Description
Caption: (WX13) WASHINGTON, JULY 30--PAUL SMITH NOW READY FOR ACTION--With his new gold bars shining on his collar, U.S. Marine Second Lt. Paul Smith former editor and General Manager of the San Francisco Chronicle, is now ready for fighting action. He resigned a Lieutenant Commander's rank in the Navy Reserve "because he couldn't run a destroyer" and he wanted to see real action. Lt. Smith earned his rank the hard way, starting as a "boot" and working his way through officers candidate school at Quantico, Va., where he graduated this week.
