Driving through Birmingham during one of the worst freezes ever was dangerous. Among the many who didn't make it on iced-over expressways was this family from Texas whose car broke down. Jim McClelland of the Red Cross checks on a family after they have bedded down for the night at Graymont Armory. Red Cross rescue units were busy helping take care of many people stranded without transportation and many who were driven from their homes when pipes burst, heating systems broke down and power went out.
