1977 Press Photo Entrance to Beth-El Cemetery, Jefferson County, Alabama

Description
North of Bessemer, almost in Hueytown, stands the cemetery once operated by Temple Beth-El. Although the synagogue has been closed several years now and is used today by another faith for its church, the little cemetery continues to be maintained, reflecting the devotion of children for the final resting place of their parents and grandparents. Occasionally there's still a graveside service in the "quite place" just off 19th Street in the Lee's Junction community. Like cemeteries everywhere, there are markers for those who lived to ripe old ages and were steeped in the Torah and traditions of their faith. Here and there are markers for infants who knew only two or three days of earthly life And now and then some one will swing open the old iron gate to stand beside the family marker and say a prayer or think back to earlier tines when the loved one laughed and cried, worked and played, philosophized with the rabbi and lighted Sabbath candles at sundown each Friday.
