Not too many years ago, the steeple bell of little Five Mile Presbyterian Church peaked across the hills and back roads of northeastern Jefferson County, calling members to worship, or to a wedding or funeral. Today, a few yards away from this scene and out of camera range, automobiles speed past, on a road that once knew the rumble of wagon and buggy wheels, and the patter of bare feet on a summer's day. The sturdy oak still spreads it strong arms over the church and the adjoining cemetery. The frame building is still used as a meeting room, but a modern brick sanctuary has replaced the little country church for worship services. (Jefferson County, Alabama0 (Churches-Presbyterian)
