1950 Press Photo Janet Fleaharty rings a replica of the Liberty Bell in NY

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Reproduction of Liberty Bell. There's nothing official about Washington's Janet Fleaharty, 5, putting all her might into the ringing of this reproduction of the Liberty Bell, but like any other American, the right's hers. The bell is one of thirteen which arrived aboard the S.S. Excalibur at New York over the weekend. Fifty-two of the replicas are being cast in France for use by the U.S. Treasury Department in the forthcoming Independence Bond Drive. Watervliet's Meneely Bell Company has protested the bypassing of American firms in having the bells made overseas.

Photo is dated 1950.

Photo measures 6 x 7.75 inches.
