1939 Press Photo French and German Army Battle on The Saar River At Saarholzbach

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
This picture was made at the time of the Saar plebiscite and shows the Saar river at Saarholzbach. The river at this point formed the frontier between Germany and the Saar but after the plebiscite in favor of Germany the territory on both sides of the river was part of the Reich. The Saar is on the right and Germany is on the left in this picture. Today reports reach us from France that reinforced German advance guards moved into the attack behind an artillery bombardment, striking across the Saar river on the Northern flank, in a bitter counter attack in efforts to repulse the French on the Western front after the latter had reportedly captured all of the Warndt Forrest in the rich Saar region. France was reported to be holding fast .

Photo is dated 1939.

Photo measures 8.5 x 6.75 inches.
