1934 Press Photo Harry Nice finally wins the gubernatorial race with his family

Harry W. Nice, republican is Governor of Maryland at last. He finally defeated his perennial political foe, incumbent Albert C. Ritchie after a rivalry that dates back 15 years at that time Governor Ritchie, running in his first race, defeated Harry Nice by the narrow margin of 165 votes. Ritchie was governor four successive times and was after his fifth term when defeat came in one of the most dramatic polls in the country. The Democratic candidate was leading all the way to the finish line when Nice nosed him out by the comparatively small margin of around 4,000 votes out of a half million cast. Harry Nice is shown reading congratulatory telegrams with his wife and his son, Harry Jr.
