N. Scott Momaday, American Indian author, reads from one of his works at the D.H. Lawrence Festival in Santa Fe, N.M., on July 17, 1980. Momaday was the first native American writer to become well known when his novel "House Made of Dawn" won the 1968 Pulitzer Prize.
