New York State Supreme Court Justice Joseph P. Pfingst, already suspended on another charge, was accused Thursday in a federal indictment of buying his nomination to the bench for $50,000. A Brooklyn grand jury reported Pfingst paid the sum to a Long Island Republican leader from a secret Swiss bank account maintained under the code name "Egypt." This is a 1964 file photo.
