Description
Eddie Merhige of Monroe, Louisiana, campaigning for the Louisiana Custodian of Voting Machines Office, was airborne for a few minutes Thursday near the state capitol in his attempt to dramatize his claim that the office he seeks in not needed. Merhige says the voting machines should be operated by Secretary of State Wade O. Martin, Jr. The balloon was tethered during Merhige's flight because of winds, but he did manage to maneuver into view of the capitol building.

Photo is dated 1971.

Photo measures 8 x 10.75 inches.
