Samora Moises Machel, center, 41-year-old revolutionary leader who will be officially sworn in as president of Mozambique Wednesday, is wide-eyed and has mouth open as he is greeted by Chinese group which met him at Lourenco Marques airport Monday. Machel wears a guerrilla uniform. The East African territory of Mozambique is slated to become an independent nation Tuesday at midnight after nearly five centuries of Portuguese colonial rule. At left is Vice President Marcelino dos Santos, also in uniform. At right is Joaqim Chissazo, premier of the transition government.
