John L. Lewis is flanked by waiters bearing cakes noting his 40 years as head of the United Mine Workers Union, at testimonial dinner here last night. Lewis retired as UMW president yesterday but was immediately elected President Emeritus. It was the first time such an honor had been bestowed on anyone by the union.
