Drs. Mehran Goulian, left, and Arthur Kernberg, head of Stanford University's Department of Biochemistry, announce to newsmen today that they have synthesized in a test tube for the first time a fully infectious DNA virus. Kornberg calls the man-made DNA biologically active, but won't say whether it is living matter. Dr. Goulian, former fellow at Stanford, is now at University of Chicago.
