1975 Press Photo Gino Hickman, hitchhiking across the country in his wheelchair

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Along the levee, a silhouette of a man in a wheelchair moved silently along the grassy path. Behind him walked a companion in a battered straw hat, and at his side pranced a curly mongrel. The intense light the river reflected behind them erased all details of their features, making the threesome a movable fixture along the skyline. Down by the river, calliope music from the Natchez Riverboat smothered the sound of construction nearby as puffs of smoke from the music box disintegrated into the light blue sea. A steady caravan of long, steel freighters cruising up the river bounced the tunes back to the bank. The wheelchair stopped as the three paused to listen. Four years ago, Gino Hickman would not have pictured himself this way: a man in a wheelchair hitchhiking across the country, stopping to absorb what each city had to offer.

Photo is dated 1975.

Photo measures 8 x 10 inches.
