1956 Press Photo A sloth, native to Brazil, relaxes on the ground at a zoo

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The laziest of animals is said to be the sloth, which may hang upside down by its powerful claws for days at a time. When removed from its usual perch -- a tree found in the jungles of Brazil -- the sleepy critter is just as content to relax on the ground. Its hooklike claws, extending far beyond the ends of its limbs, are perfectly adapted to tree life but make walking difficult. Here's one at a zoo in his favorite sport, relaxing. (Animals -- Sloth)

Photo is dated 1956.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
