Description
Religion staggers in the Soviet Union under Communist oppression by propaganda. Yet a relatively few churches struggle on, keeping alive a spark of Christianity in a society officially atheistic. Here, in Yalta's bright sun, is a striking example of Russian Orthodox architecture. It also is an example of Christian persistence, for it is an operating church. You see an old woman struggling up the slope. Old people, almost alone among the Soviet masses, comprise the congregations in the cities. The church is stronger in the rural areas.

Photo is dated 1962.

Photo measures 7 x 10.25 inches.
