1959 Press Photo Post office clerks hand sorting mail in sorting room.

Description
The nation's postal system handles a staggering 62 million pieces of mail a year. One of the big problems has been to get automatic equipment to help the many human hands needed for the job. Here clerks are sorting mail, one of the 15-19 times the average letter is handled between mailing and delivery. Modern machines may cut this down to six or seven operations.
