Dag Hammarskjold, secretary general of the United Nations, with the U.N. buildings in the background. In three years on the difficult job, Hammarskjold has won praise and respect from all parts of the divided world. His skill as a diplomat was tested in such matters as the Middle East situation and tension over imprisonment of American fliers in Red China. He eased trigger tension between the U.S. and Communist China by winning the release of the American fliers from Chou En-Lai.
