Description
Gaylord Nelson, Democrat --Gaylord Nelson Opens Campaign in hone town. There's a bit of the country boy still left in Gaylord Nelson. This was particularly evident Sunday as the governor of Wisconsin stuck a stem of grass between his teeth (right) and talked politics with his boyhood friends and neighbors of Clear Lake (population 724). Democrats Nelson went home to open his campaign for the United State senate seat held by Republican Alexander Wiley who has announced his intention to hold onto it. The Polk county folks welcomed Governor Nelson with open arms, bent his ear on such diverse subjects as medicare and farm subsidies and feted him in the high school gymnasium. The governor responded warmly to the welcome with homespun reminiscences. Democrats agreed, it was good to have Gaylord home.
