Pro and anti-government factions clash in the Empress Market Place here 2/17. Rioting broke out when Pathan tribesmen, supporters of President Mohammad Ayub Khan, attacked crowds waiting to welcome leftist opposition leader Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to Karachi. In the wake of the rioting, which was accompanied by several burning incidents in the market place and in some of the city's buildings and political offices, army troops were called out to reinforce police trying to control the rioters.
