1993 Press Photo Students at Marquette University learned about Mehndie painting

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Susan Alunkal, a Marquette University student from India, uses a technique called mehndie to dress up the hand of fellow student Caterina Imperiale. Mehndie is the artistic application of henna, a type of herb, to a woman's hands before her wedding. It is common throughout India and Pakistan and has its origins in Islam. The herb leaves a stain after it dries. The artistic demonstration was part of an International day celebration Friday at Marquette University Alumni Memorial Union.

Photo is dated 1993.

Photo measures 9.25 x 7 inches.
