1971 Press Photo Dr. Carter Collins of San Francisco Smith-Kettlewell Institute

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Dr. Carter C. Collins, right, of San Francisco's Smith-Kettlewell Institute, adjusts the portable version of a new sensory aid for the blind worn by the subject in the picture. The equipment transmits pictorial information from a small television camera mounted on a pair of spectacles to electrodes places on the abdomen. The skin of the abdomen picks up the information. An improved model of the device may be ready for field tests in about a year.

Photo is dated 1971.

Photo measures 7.75 x 10 inches.
