1990 Press Photo Mongolian Woman Spins Prayer Wheel & Horse Riders - hcx11132

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Mongolia. A woman spins a prayer wheel at the Gandan Monastery in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. In the 1930s, in an extension of the Stalinist terror that was then sweeping the Soviet Union, all monasteries in Mongolia were either razed or closed, except for Gandan, but open interest in Buddhism is now permitted. Mongol riders travel the snow-covered grasslands. Among the changes in Mongolia is a renewal of open respect for Genghis Khan, the founder of the Mongol nation, who united warring tribes nearly 800 years ago and set them to conquering most of Asia and part of Europe.

Photo is dated 1990.

Photo measures 10.5 x 8.25 inches.
