Lands on aircraft carrier at sea - The XC-142A (XC142A) tri-service V/STOL (vertical short takeoff and landing) transport rises vertically from the flight deck of the USS Bennington in the Pacific off the California coast during intensive preliminary carrier evaluation this week. It was the first time in American Naval Aviation history that a transport-type airplane capable of flying more than 400 miles an hour in forward flight and taking off and landing vertically had ever performed the feat.
