NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT -- HEAD RECORD SMASHER -- Nick Kirby of the New Haven Swim Club towels off after knocking two full seconds from the American record in the 200-yard freestyle at the National AAU Indoor Swim Championships Saturday. Seven other bettered the national mark of 1:47.9 in their trial heats. Kirby, an able seaman under Yale University's ROTC program, had a blistering time of 1:45.6.
