Description
Alligators (Haven in Georgia). Waycross, Georgia. A visitor looks across the vast Okefenokee Swamp near Waycross, Georgia, where the alligator is flourishing again, under the protection of man. The great reptile, hunted to near extinction because his uniquely tough hide made handsome, durable and expensive shoes and handbags, is safe here from the poachers and hunters because of heavy fines or imprisonment just for possessing an alligator hide. A Georgia law goes into effect July 1 banning alligator hide shoes and handbags.

Photo is dated 1972.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
