Description
"Hundreds of mechanics at the Army Air Force' Randolph Field in Texas give each plane its pre-flight inspection: resting engines and controls, checking fuel and lubricant supply. "..." I think the propeller technicians, of such apparently humane fellows as Sgt. Bill Baseheart, a quiet, capable 20-year-old from Zanesville, Ohio. I think of him working carefully in the Randolph sub-depot, overhauling the interior machinery of adjustable-pitch propellers, painstakingly honing out of the blades dents the size of half a pinhead..........." Corporal Bill Stamfer, formerly of Waynesburg, KY., an ex-railroader whose hair is red enough to read by at night, came over from the radio department to do his stuff on the plane's conversation equipment." At right, George Sessions Perry, (left) is shown with Sgt. Baseheart at a propeller balancing stand. At left, Corp. Stamfer checks plane's radio installation during 50 hour inspection.
