1937 Press Photo Freighter Wichita may test Japan's blockade of China Coastline

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The American Freighter Wichita is shown tied up at the Waterfront here, prior to its sailing to China with a load of Bellanca planes and a quantity of barbed wire since Japan has declared a blockage of the China coastline, even though she has not declared war against China formally. This vessel may test this "illegal" blockade. Government officials here and abroad, fear that the stopping of this boat from entering any Chinese Port, might lead to serious International complications. The S.S. Wichita sailed from here at 5:45 PM, August 27th.

Photo is dated 1937.

Photo measures 8.5 x 6.75 inches.
