1983 Press Photo Mine Technician with bored hole on Route 61 in Pennsylvania

Earlier this year, a mine technician from the Federal Office of Surface Mining checked on a newly-bored hole along Route 61 in Centralia, Pennsylvania. The bore hole is part of an $85,000 project to determine the magnitude of the underground mine fire that rages beneath the town.
