Description
A giant step for paraplegics: Paralyzed from the ribs down, Sam Khawam walks with the aid of a computer in Miraculous Maghines, a new National Geographic Special made possible by a grant from Gulf Oil, now a part of Chevron. Attached to his belt, a paperback-sized computer, controlled with a hand switch, stimulates electrodes implanted in Sam's legs. With this device and the support of crutches, Sam can climb stairs and walk as far as 60 feet.

Photo is dated 1984.

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
