1961 Press Photo Fireworks display in front of the Washington Monument

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air give a spectacular brilliance to the Washington Monument and the White House on the eve of President Truman's inauguration in 1949. But even the pyrotechnics couldn't match President Truman's own fireworks the preceding year, when he pulled the political upset of the century by winning the election that all experts said would go to Thomas E. Dewey.

Photo is dated 1961.

Photo measures 7 x 9.25 inches.
