1960 Press Photo Dry pad launching of Jupiter rocket from Cape Canaveral, FL

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Here is a real closeup view of the launching of the Jupiter rocket early today just a few seconds after ignition. Liftoff has barely started and the ice around the missile is still firm. Ice forms due to the extremely low temperature of the liquid oxygen fuel. Part of the launch pad can be seen beneath the missile. The Jupiter is fired from a dry pad on a concrete slab whereas other rockets are fired from a water cooled platform. White spray at left is liquid oxygen coming from the umbilical service cord after it was disconnected from rocket. The missile failed to get a moon probe up to speed to reach its goal.

Photo is dated 1960.

Photo measures 8.25 x 10.25 inches.
