1973 Press Photo Britain's Geoffrey Rippon views electric car engine in London

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Geoffrey Rippon, right, British secretary of state for the environment, looks at the engine of an electric car in London Wednesday. The car is on loan from Britain's electricity council to the environment department for use by Rippon. The car, a converted 1965 Austin Mini-Traveller powered by eight 12-volt batteries, has run over 7,000 miles on electricity, has a top speed on the level of about 40 miles per hour, and has a range of about 25 miles between battery charges. Because of the space taken by the batteries, the car will only seat two.

Photo is dated 1973.

Photo measures 8 x 10.5 inches.
