Description
Pope Paul VI reads his appeal for peace during a mass he celebrated today in the 16th century Church of Jesus in downtown Rome. The church contains the tomb of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit Order. In his speech the Pontiff cried out against the modern man's "diabolical capacity" to produce "arms of every size and shape." It is the third New Year's Day designated by Pope Paul as a "Day of Peace."

Photo is dated 1970.

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
