United Nations Undersecretary-General Chakravarthi V. Narasimhan is shown talking with then Secretary-General U Thant, right, at the United Nations in 1964. Thant considered him as his alter ego, or other self. Narasimhan, who now serves as top assistant to the new Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, thinks of himself as Waldheim's "shock absorber."
