Description
"All the signs are good, but you never know what can happen," says Joseph Papp, head of the New York Shakespeare Festival, photographed in his Manhattan office. He's referring to his company's revival of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance," which has just re-opened on Broadway with rock superstar Linda Ronstadt, after a successful summer run in Central Park. Papp hopes for a Broadway hit to swell his non-profit company's coffers--he calls the production "an investment for our own continuity."

Photo is dated 1980.
