1960 Press Photo Giant sphere protects radar dish-antenna tracking radar

Giant radar dish-antenna housed in this 15-story-high plastic and paper sphere at the Radio Corporation of America plant in Moorestown, New Jersey, is part of the nation's Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS). High-powered transmitting apparatus and complex computers in base building are designed to detect and track missiles 2,000 miles away. Device is prototype of detection radar sets which scientists hope will give nation 15-minute warning in event of ballistic missile attack.
