1966 Press Photo Pete Bowers in women's clothes on 1912 replica bi-plane

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Dressed in women's clothes, Pete Bowers, Seattle, takes off in his replica of a 1912 bi-plane to start the annual Power Puff Derby Transcontinental Air Race Monday. Bowers, an engineer, recreates old planes as a hobby. A man sprawled on the runway beneath the craft apparently is not sure the bi-plane is going to remain airborne. Eighty-two planes, carrying 144 women fliers, started the 2,765-mile race from Seattle to Clearwater, Florida.

Photo is dated 1966.

Photo measures 8 x 9 inches.
