1969 Press Photo Aerospace Defense Command's "super radar," Eglin Air Force Base

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The Aerospace Defense Command at Colorado Springs said Tuesday its new "super radar" (center) designed especially for detecting and tracking objects in space, went into operation this week at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. The sensing area, bigger than a football field, is in marked contrast to a 100-mile-range missile tracker of the 1940s (top). Air Force personnel will operate and maintain the new radar, helping with missile defenses and cataloguing of objects in outer space.

Photo is dated 1969.

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
