Eugene Ormandy, conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra tells of a phone conversation with President Nixon and his adviser Henry Kissinger with an invitation from Chou En-Lai to appear in China sometime this year. Ormandy said Kissinger told him the idea originated with Chou.
