1959 Press Photo Soviet authorities pin-point landing site of Soviet moon rocket

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Soviet authorities said tonight, in confidently pin-pointing the location of their moon rocket, that it would land about one-quarter away from the center of the moon's disc to its crater edge at a point near the Sea of Tranquility, the Sea of Serenity and the Sea of Rainbows. Map shows these points on the moon's surface which were mapped years ago by scientists. The scientist assume that the "seas" are dry but do not know if they are dust or barren rock.

Photo is dated 1959.

Photo measures 6 x 10 inches.
