The south polar region of Mars shows a wide variety of crater sizes and forms in this picture, No. 19 in Mariner 7's near encounter series. Linear and blotchy features not obviously related to cratering are also visible said scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, California. A pair of craters resembling a footprint may be seen in the right center portion of the picture.
