1964 Press Photo Reverend James Sessions escorted by police after picketing

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The Reverend James Sessions, chaplain of Drew University, is escorted by a policeman today following his arrest during picketing outside a barber shop in Madison, New Jersey, that accepts only white customers. Three African Americans were also arrested. The shop is normally closed on Wednesday but the shop owner and barbers from four other shops who refuse to serve African Americans worked today for funds to defend themselves against what they call a violation of their constitutional rights.

Photo is dated 1964.

Photo measures 8 x 10 inches.
