Byron Jay, above, became the new President of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company at the meeting of the firm's board on directors in New York today following the annual meeting of shareholders. Jay, who has been President of the Central Western Division of the company, was named to the presidency to fill the vacancy created when Melvin W. Allredge was named as vice chairman.
