Roger Hilsman, Jr., poses today after President Kennedy announced his appointment as Assistant Secretary of State for Far Eastern Affairs. Hilsman, a native of Waco, TX, is now director of the State Department's bureau of Intelligence and Research. His appointment was one of two announced--Undersecretary of State George McGhee was named Ambassador to Germany. The post of Assistant Secretary for Far Eastern Affairs is now held by W. Averell Harriman who is slated to take over McGhee's post.
