The Reverend Adelhelm Hess, 89, a volunteer observer for the U.S. Weather Bureau since November 1, 1894 receives the Thomas Jefferson Award. H.C. McComb, left, and M.G. Asp, right, officials in the Kansas City weather bureau office presented the award "for nearly seven decades of outstanding service as cooperative weather observer at Conception, MO" The Conception Abbey Father, a former college language teacher, began taking weather observations only four years after the bureau was formed.
