Mayor-elect Kenneth Gibson shouts "Right On" to supporters gathered to cheer his victory Tuesday over Mayor Hugh J. Addonizio. Gibson, becoming the first black mayor in a large northeast city, won with 54 percent of the vote--about 17,000 votes.
