A few persons walk towards a ring of troops surrounding the National Palace early Thursday as word of the death of Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier spreads. Affixed to statue of Toussaint L' Cuverture, foreground, hero of Haiti's War of Independence, is a poster showing Duvalier and his son Jean Claude. It shows the two when Jean Claude Duvalier was announced as President-designate last January.
