Wladyslaw Gomulka, center, Polish Communist Party leader, embraces his East German counterpart, Walter Ulbricht, after Ulbricht arrived in Warsaw today. At right is President Edward Ochab of Poland. Ulbricht and other East German government leaders came to sign a friendship treaty with Poland in an effort to shore up East German prestige despite the West German political offensive in eastern Europe.
